New Parent Emergency Checklist

Emergencies are stressful enough and they’re even harder with a baby or toddler. This checklist helps you prepare a simple “grab-and-go” setup for evacuations, power outages, winter storms, and smoky air days, without panic buying.

Download our 1-page printable checklist (PDF) and save it to your phone for quick access.

The essentials

Basics

  • Diapers (enough for 24 hours)

  • Wipes + diaper cream

  • Disposable bags (for diapers/clothes)

  • Changing pad

  • 2 full changes of clothes (layered)

Feeding

  • Ready-to-feed formula OR shelf-stable milk (if relevant)

  • Bottles + nipples

  • Bottle brush + small dish soap

  • Snacks (age-appropriate)

  • Water for caregiver (and for mixing, if you use powder)

Comfort + sleep

  • Pacifier(s)

  • Small blanket + comfort item

  • Lightweight swaddle/sleep sack

Health

  • Baby/toddler medication basics (as applicable)

  • Thermometer

  • Any prescriptions + dosing instructions

Car + stroller add-ons (highly recommended)

  • Warm layers (hat, mitts, spare socks)

  • Rain cover for stroller

  • Extra blanket

  • Phone charger + backup light source

  • Small first-aid kit basics

  • Mask(s) for smoke days (adult sizes, plus what your pediatric guidance recommends)

Documents + contacts (put in a zip pouch)

  • Health card copies

  • Pediatrician / walk-in clinic info

  • Emergency contacts

  • Any custody/consent documents (if relevant)

  • A recent family photo (helps in reunification scenarios)

10-minute family plan (the part people skip)

  • Choose a meeting point outside your home

  • Decide who grabs the baby/toddler and who grabs the bag

  • Write one out-of-town contact everyone can text

  • Save your address in your phone notes (yes, seriously — in a stressful moment, people blank)

Want a ready-to-go starter kit?

If you’re building your emergency setup from scratch, start small and practical. The MiniPack covers core basics in a compact kit you can keep in a diaper bag, car, or entryway.

Pro tip: pair it with a phone charger + emergency radio so you have light, power, and updates if the power is out.
