Flash Flood Preparedness: What to Do Before, During, and After
If you’re concerned about flooding in your area, this guide can help you to be prepared in the event of an emergency.
Before a Flash Flood
Sign up for local weather alerts (e.g., Environment Canada, Alert Ready).
Know your flood risk. Are you in a floodplain? Near a creek or low-lying area?
Keep your emergency kit stocked and accessible.
Prepare a “go bag” with essentials in case you need to evacuate quickly.
Make a family communication plan and meeting spot.
During a Flash Flood
If there’s a warning: move to higher ground immediately.
Never walk or drive through floodwaters.
Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
If inside, go to the highest safe level (but not the attic unless there’s a way out).
After a Flash Flood
Avoid flooded areas and listen to authorities for updates.
Do not return home until it’s safe.
Watch out for debris, downed power lines, and contaminated water.
Take photos of damage for insurance and clean up with gloves and protective gear.
