Flash Flood Preparedness: What to Do Before, During, and After

If you’re concerned about flooding in your area, this guide can help you to be prepared in the event of an emergency.

Before a Flash Flood

  • Sign up for local weather alerts (e.g., Environment Canada, Alert Ready).

  • Know your flood risk. Are you in a floodplain? Near a creek or low-lying area?

  • Keep your emergency kit stocked and accessible.

  • Prepare a “go bag” with essentials in case you need to evacuate quickly.

  • Make a family communication plan and meeting spot.

During a Flash Flood

  • If there’s a warning: move to higher ground immediately.

  • Never walk or drive through floodwaters.

  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.

  • If inside, go to the highest safe level (but not the attic unless there’s a way out).

After a Flash Flood

  • Avoid flooded areas and listen to authorities for updates.

  • Do not return home until it’s safe.

  • Watch out for debris, downed power lines, and contaminated water.

  • Take photos of damage for insurance and clean up with gloves and protective gear.
